Our Story

What is Haynote?

Why we built this, and where it's going.

Something I love to see is whenever a new website or social media app is released, everything feels fresh. The algorithm is recommending new content from a diverse range of creators, musicians, and artists in general. The feed is not just filled with accounts that have millions of followers.

How many talented artists will never be discovered because they did not go viral, cannot afford to promote themselves, or do not have a marketing degree? This feeling does not last long.

It was this feeling of wishing the next social media site or music sharing platform would come out so we could have fresh content that inspired the Haynote model. How can we create a site that constantly has fresh music that people can actually find?

The initial thought was to only allow small creators onto the site. Once an artist reached 100,000 followers, they would have 6 months to refer their fans to another site of their choosing and then be removed. This seemed a bit harsh, but it did accomplish the goal.

After discussion, we decided to implement a growth model, prioritizing earlier tiers through algorithmic favor and exposure. As artists progress through the tiers, the algorithm will push them less, but we hope that meaningful connections with their supporters will continue to drive them forward. Once they reach alumni status, they will have 6 months to offboard their fans to other sites. Their catalogue can stay with us. New music will be restricted, with details to be determined as we fully launch.

Platforms for big artists already exist. We are not trying to compete with them. We actively encourage artists to grow on the platforms they choose. In that same light, please go follow them on their other social platforms. Go to their shows. Get involved.

We are in beta and still looking for musicians and listeners. The final shape of Haynote Music is still to be determined.

Thank you for being here.
